A snow filled surprise
Winter magic at Swallow Tree
Swallow Tree Gardens and much of Pembrokeshire woke under a soft blanket of snow this week — a rare and magical moment for our coastal corner of Wales. Along the woods, on the lawns, and even across the bay, snowflakes settled turning familiar paths into winter wonderlands.
Children thrilled as many schools closed giving them (and grown-ups!) the chance to enjoy building snowmen, making snow angels and sledging down slopes. (Our elevated park made a perfect ground for this) Driveways cleared and businesses working fast to ensure safe access for all visitors braving the cold.
Snow doesn't fall in Saundersfoot often which is why this weeks weather was so special. It was the perfect opportunity for spontaneous winter walks by the coast — stunning views, frosty air, and the quiet beauty that only snow brings.
At the park, guests enjoyed this rare treat of snow topped roofs, frozen leaves and steamy hot tubs overlooking shimmering seas.
With snow being somewhat of an uncommon guest in Saundersfoot, one possible reason for sudden, heavier bursts is a weather phenomenon known as the “Pembrokeshire Dangler,” where cold air converges over the Irish Sea and leads to showers of snow, hail or sleet along the coast. These sorts of events have brought surprise snowfalls in past years, for example in 2013 where Saundersfoot experienced significant snowfall and disruption during two main periods: a widespread snowy spell in January and severe blizzards later in March.
On the coast, snow doesn’t always settle - warm sea air often melts it quickly. So when it does stick, it’s even more magical. Winter storms can bring dramatic waves and powerful spray. When coupled with snow, the effect is otherworldly: a white-dusted coastline that feels both wild and peaceful.
This kind of snowfall reminds us how special winter can be here - it’s not just about summer sun or sea views; it’s about unique, quiet moments you don’t always get. A chance to pause and be thankful for the little things in life. We really hope our guests took the chance to capture the beauty of a Welsh winter - whether on camera or just in their memory.
