Autumn has fallen

One of the things we love most about living and working here at Swallow Tree Gardens is watching Pembrokeshire change with the seasons. Each time of year brings its own kind of magic – from long, bright summer days to the golden calm of autumn, the wild energy of winter storms, and the fresh promise of spring.
As the summer crowds drift away, Pembrokeshire reveals a quieter, gentler side. Coastal paths are less travelled, beaches stretch out with more space to roam, and woodland trails crunch underfoot with fallen leaves. The sea air feels cooler but somehow softer, and the sunsets glow deep amber and pink across the horizon.

Autumn is also a season full of life here. If you’re lucky, you may spot Atlantic grey seals with their pups along sheltered coves — a truly magical sight. Deer park near Martin's Haven is a favourite of ours. https://www.pembrokeshirecoast.wales/about-the-national-park/wildlife/seals/  offer more guidance on how to enjoy the pup season whilst keeping seals safe. The cliffs are quieter now that seabird colonies have moved on, but migrating birds pass through on their way south, and hedgerows are heavy with berries for local wildlife to feast on. It’s a reminder that Pembrokeshire isn’t just a summer holiday spot — it’s a living, breathing landscape all year-round.

With fewer visitors, castles and heritage sites become more peaceful to explore. A wander through Pembroke Castle, a stroll around St David’s, or a bracing walk along the coastal path followed by hot chocolate in a seaside café all feel extra special at this time of year. And by October, you’ll often find fires crackling again in village pubs – perfect after a day in the sea air.
For us, autumn is about connection: to nature, to family, and to a slower pace of life. Whether it’s a long weekend or a week away, there’s something grounding about walking a quiet beach, spotting wildlife, then heading back to a cosy base to warm up and relax.
Pembrokeshire really is a coast for all seasons — and autumn might just be when it shines its brightest.
